My Day and a Half at the Hospital

So Turtle and I were coming back into Santa Cruz Sunday evening after spending the weekend with his family and I was feeling kind of motion sick (shocking I know). When we got home I was still feeling pretty nasty so I skipped dinner and went to bed. I had only been asleep for a couple of hours when the excruciating pain woke me up. Turtle hadn't slept much the night before and was feeling like he might be getting sick so I really didn't want to wake him. I went downstairs and paced and tried to find a comfortable way to sit or lay or stand or whatever but failed miserably. By 5am ish I couldn't stand it anymore and woke Turtle up. When I showed him where it hurt and explained that I hadn't been able to sleep he wanted to take me to the Emergency room but I was a little worried that I might just have really bad gas or something and would feel stupid but Turtle got us both dressed and took me anyway (he is so my hero).

When we got there I was in so much pain I was sweating and had trouble answering the check in nurses questions. The doc came in and pushed on my stomach and asked me - does it hurt here, how 'bout here over and over again. I apparently said too many things hurt so he gave me some anti-nausea and anti-pain medication (he was also my hero). After the pain had settled I was poked and prodded some more - they took some blood, some urine, sent me to get tested for stuff (Cat Scans suck by the way). Finally they decided I had Appendicitis and started the process to get me admitted to the Hospital for surgery.

The operation went flawlessly and the Surgeon told Turtle everything was fine and that I hadn't ruptured and he was able to do the laparoscopic appendectomy which is way cooler than opening me up all the way. My mom drove into town to help take care of me which was especially awesome since she stayed with me at the hospital and Turtle was able to go home and get some actual sleep (poor thing had two nights of crap sleep in a row and was feeling really awful by that point).

The next day it took forever for them to finally let me go home, but everyone was really friendly so it wasn't too bad. Finally I was discharged this evening around 7ish and mom brought me back home (she is so my hero). Now I am all snuggled up on the couch with my cat and my laptop, resting and drinking lots of fluids.

All things considered my first trip to the hospital went quite well!

So my kitty has had a mole since I got him that never bothered him so I didn't think about it much. About a year ago it started getting bigger and I recently finally took him to the vet. We decided to get the thing removed which would involve him going under and staying at the vets all day. It was awful! Cubby does not like the car! Does not like the kitty carrier and does not like the vets office! He cried the whole way and totally broke my heart. At the end of the day Turtle and I went to pick him up from the vet where he had been very good all day and mostly slept, though they did have trouble getting him back in the kitty carrier. When we got him home he couldn't walk straight and he was totally wasted. He hid under the bed for a while and then came downstairs to glare at us and then stare at the ceiling and then glare again. The good news is he was back to his normal self by the next day and the vet just called and said the lump was benign - Yay! (insert happy kitty dance here)

Michelle and cruises do not mix

Background: Turtle's Aunt won a bunch of money towards a cruise line and so decided to take the whole family (31 people though only 25 actually came). I was a little concerned about this idea due to my tendency to be horrifically motion sick on anything that, well, moves. Everyone I talked to reassured me that I wouldn't be able to feel anything since the boat was so big. I brought with me my anti-motion sickness pills that have helped me greatly in the past and a good attitude.

Motion sick _the_whole_time_

I did get a bit of a break when I was asleep though. So I slept a lot.

Moral: no more cruises for Michelle!

So last week Turtle's sister finally had the baby (she was due in July) - a healthy baby boy named Joshua who is very very alert and seems very patient with his 5 brothers and sisters poking and prodding him. On the other hand Turtle's Grandma had an angiogram and discovered that she needs triple bypass surgery _plus_ a repair to an aneurysm in her aorta. Turtle and I canceled all our plans this weekend and went to hang out with her. She is actually doing really well right now. She is nervous about what is going to happen but her family is rallying around her and keeping her spirits up. We had a great time hanging out with her (except it is way to hot in Southern California - blech) and I'm really glad we went. Now we just have to wait and see how her appointment goes today.
As anyone who has ever traveled with me knows, I get motion sickness. I get sick on pretty much any moving thing which unfortunately includes roller coasters. I've always felt like a wet blanket and like I should some how be able to get over it so that I don't disappoint my friends but I just can't. This weekend some of us went to Great America to get some Momo and Appa plush toys that aren't sold anywhere else and I once again tried a fairly tame roller coaster (no spinning or going backwards - two of my biggest nemeses) and was definitely green by the end. So from that point on I sat on a shady bench some where near the current ride with all the stuff and my crocheting and DS...and had the time of my life! I got to hang out with my friends and play games and crochet while also being useful. It was wonderful! Plus I got to ride home with Appa on my lap and Momo on my shoulder.
I am feeling so blah today. I had a long painful dental appt yesterday, I need to do laundry so I can pack for the Disnyland trip and I am really running out of time since I have to work tonight and I need to be all packed by comicnight tomorrow, I am also not going to be done with Turtle's b-day presents in time and I couldn't find half the things I wanted to get him. I just feel all over blech. I hope this mood lifts before we arrive at Disneyland. Feeling blech at Disneyland on Turtle's birthday would be very bad. Maybe I will feel better when I take my next dose of painkillers (stupid dental work).
I just need to think happy thoughts. Thank goodness for Cute Overload and my DS.

When I got to camp Friday night (the day before my birthday) my tent was a puddle and my sleeping bag was soaked. I was ready to call it off and go home but a nice Constable helped us hang up our sleeping bags and gave us a place to sleep for the night. The next day was my birthday and I was a bit concerned because my luck has seemed to be sucking pretty bad recently. Fortunately friends came to visit me at Faire, People kept randomly giving me flowers (courtesy of Cassandra I found out later) and Ann brought Chocolate cake and vanilla ice cream for me and AJ. Just a friendly reminder from the Universe that the bad stuff has to happen so the good stuff is appreciated. Woo Hoo! My birthday didn't suck at all!

I've decided that the problem is nothing is as good as real teeth. Once you have to get a replacement chewing will never be as good again. My temp crown fell out again the day after they put it back in and today my permanent shiny new crown chipped on a bagel. Which brings me to the logical conclusion that we are all doomed. Ok I know that doesn't seem to be relevent but stay with me. All my life I've been told by countless number of people that their biggest regret in life is not taking better care of their teeth. So why didn't I take better care of my teeth? Why can't I learn from other peoples mistakes? Why can't anyone seem to learn the lessons of the past and come up with interesting new mistakes instead of making all the same stupid mistakes generation after generation? In conclusion we are doomed. Either that or I am just grumpy about my teeth...
I will not let this ruin my birthday though, I promise! I will have fun on my birthday because I damn well said so. If anyone gives me any crap I'm going to walk away and have fun somewhere else. No drama! Only comedy!

My crown fell out...again. Third time no less. I ran off to the dentists...again to get it fixed. They had the permanent crowns so they figured they would go ahead and fit them - except my gums were crazy inflamed for no apparent reason and then it didn't fit right. So they did manage to put one of the permanent crowns in but the other one is still a temporary and I need to go back and get refitted and get a cavity filled etc...I guess thats what I get for saying all is well. Sigh.

Ren Faire this weekend was quite wonderful. Ann wasn't around much Saturday which was sad but she came for the last call singing and then we had mustard green salad with goat cheese. MMmmmmmm. Then Sunday she was out and about the whole day and even saved Lady Shepfield from the jail. It was much fun. Yesterday though I was feeling really grumpy and I kept snapping at Turtle every time he said anything so he came up with the brilliant idea for me to take a nice hot bath which made me feel much better. He even ran the bath for me and put nice smelling bath salts in it. I think I've found myself a keeper. And so, once again, all is well in the land of Michelle

I woke up this morning to the discover that I started my period "for real" and had cramps to end all cramps. I took a handfull of painkillers, slapped a heat patch on my back and shuffled myself off to work. I can't miss today because it is the big enrollment day. I get here and have 10 messages from angry students, a panicking instructor or two and a decision on which section to screw over. Then while I am working on this big knot my crown falls off...again. Same one as last time. I was eating a muffin. It didn't even have any nuts. Then I lost said crown down the sink - I can't leave work to go get it fixed right now because no one else can do this and today is the only day to do this. Then about an hour later the enrollment system goes down. I've been steadily working all day and making a small dent in this huge pile 'o' crap but the system has crashed 4 times now and I am getting a little bit frustrated especially since it is difficult to eat (stupid crown) and difficult to sit still very long (stupid period).

On a happier note...no wait...I'm out of those. When I think of one I will let you know...

Down comes the Crown

So this all happend thursday and friday but it was too hectic to post so here is my story: Earlier this summer I got two root canals...not only were they fairly unpleasant they also depleted both my credit cards and my sick leave/vacation time. My Dentist started getting on my case about not coming in to finish the process with crowns and I finally gave in when they expressed concern that I could lose the teeth (eek!). I worked it out with my boss that I would work through lunch a couple of days and other such things to be able to make the 2:30 appt on Thursday and Turtle even worked at home so that he could give me a ride to and from the dentist office. They did all the grinding and molding etc and gave me my temp crowns. The very next day at 11:00 am one of the crowns fell out. I was eating a brownie - not a male brownie mind you, a female one (no nuts). I freaked out and then called my dentist, he was out of town, so I called the dentist on call - they said they could see me at noon and told me they were on Fredrick St. This involves me catching a bus to the metro center and then another bus to Fredrick St. I walk four blocks or so and find the office - then I waited and waited and waited and you get the idea. Finally they go in to reattach the fallen crown but they build up so much around it that it will be twice as hard to get off when I go in to get permanents and I won't be able to floss in that region. Then I catch a bus to Longs to pick up the prescription mouthwash (which is nasty!) where I am told that I will need to wait an hour to get my prescription. Sigh. I call my boss and let her know that I will probably not make it back up that day ( I didn't get back to my house until 4:00) which means I need to work overtime to make up the hours I missed on friday. Sigh Good thing I am supposed to work both Saturday and Sunday this weekend (thus why I am not at Renn Faire) Now I have an hour left here at work in the middle of my 12 day week.

On the flip side I went to Mitch and Jen's for a girls night t-shirt craft-fest. I was able to adjust my work T-shirt to be much more interesting and comfortable. I got many compliments and one of the student workers asked me to recraft a T-shirt for her that shows off her tattoo without showing too much other stuff. Now all I have to do is figure out when I want to hold my birthday party.
